Mysterious Melchizedek (Heb 7:1–10)

A Study of Hebrews: Lesson 18

The priesthood of Melchizedek is arguably the most mysterious element of Hebrews. What does it mean that Jesus is “a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek” (5:10; see also 6:20)?

  1. Jesus’ priesthood is first in order or rank. Melchizedek is the first priest mentioned in the bible (first in chronological order). But he was also a priest and a king (first in rank).

  2. Jesus’ priesthood is not due to ancestry. Melchizedek was not a priest due to his lineage (v 3). Likewise, something else qualifies Jesus.

  3. Jesus’ priesthood is eternal. Since Melchizedek’s death is never recorded, he simply “lives” (vv 3, 8). By his resurrection, Jesus’ priesthood is also eternal. This last point will become significant going forward.
